On Friday, 30th November 2007 we were picked up by a coach from Amersham station.  There were several more pick-ups on the way so it took us a good 4 hours to board the shuttle at Folkestone.  One more stop along the way and finally we arrived at St. Goar late at night.

Saturday after breakfast we had time to look around St. Goarhausen, accessible from St Goar by ferry only.  It is, like St Goar, a delightful old town with wonderful gift shops.  In the afternoon we visited Rüdesheim, starting with a wine tasting session in an old cellar.

Next was the Christmas Market.  There were wonderful stalls, delicious smells and hoards of people.  We had enough time to enjoy the evening there and all the lights were magical.

Some of us went to enjoy a glass of Glühwein, others tried the Lebkuchen, went up the mountain in a lit up chairlift and really got drawn into Christmas spirit

A nice dinner together ended a very eventful day with the return trip along the Rhein past the Lorelei rock.

Day 2 was an early start for a 3½-hour journey by coach to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.  This is a very well known beautiful walled medieval town, well worth a visit any time.

We started with a visit to a Kaffeehaus and with new strength walked the city, saw wonderful carvings at a church and walked half way round the city on the city wall

The Market itself we found lacked on variety.  It sold mostly food with Christmas bits and pieces in the Christmas shops. Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to have such a long drive – the day before our return journey.

Up early next morning for breakfast and then back home.  At Brussels we were given 20 minutes for a comfort stop (no time for food) then had to rush to have enough time to visit a Fag shop – we think the driver must have been given a backhander! Another 20 minute stop at the supermarket – what is 20 minutes!!  Then we boarded the shuttle (still no time for food).  Nice of Sylvia to share her Stollen with us.  A couple of stops for drop-offs (no time for food!) but we were promised there would be a longer stop in an hours time – which would have been South Mimms.  Somehow the driver missed the exit – we drove past South Mimms – still no food!  Then instead of the M25 we suddenly found ourselves on the M1 – there were no service stations – still no food. About 7pm we arrived back at Amersham – very hungry! A complaint has been sent to the travel company in question.
